The Webinar Series Returns for a New Season of Global Conversations on Media Management
After a well-earned pause, the joint webinar series organized by the International Media Management Academic Association (IMMAA) and the Center for International Tele-Information (CITI) is back. The 2026–2027 season opens on Thursday, September 24th, at 11:00 AM New York Time (5:00 PM in much of Europe, 8:00 AM US West Coast), with the series returning to its familiar one-hour format.
For years, this webinar series has been a monthly forum where IMMAA’s global community gathers to hear directly from leading scholars, executives, and innovators shaping the future of media. As the new season opens, that conversation resumes with a topic at the center of the industry’s current disruption.
The opening session, “Video Games: New Business Models for Revenue Streams and Distribution”, is presented by Joost van Dreunen, entrepreneur, investor, and professor of the business of video games at NYU Stern School of Business. As artificial intelligence accelerates demand for computing power, the era of abundant, low-cost processing is coming to an end — reshaping the economics of cloud infrastructure, gaming, technology platforms, and digital innovation more broadly. Van Dreunen will examine how rising compute costs are changing competitive dynamics in cloud gaming, influencing investment decisions, and creating new challenges and opportunities for businesses that depend on scalable technology — and what this next phase of the AI economy means for leaders, investors, researchers, and innovators across the media landscape.
Van Dreunen is a serial entrepreneur and investor who has built and backed companies acquired by Nielsen, Unity, and Sensor Tower. He is the author of One Up: Creativity, Competition, and the Global Business of Video Games (Columbia University Press), with a second book forthcoming. He also publishes the SuperJoost Playlist, a weekly newsletter on the economics and strategy of the games industry read by executives, investors, and academics, and holds a PhD from Columbia University.
The series is organized by Eli Noam, Emeritus Director of the Columbia Institute for Tele-Information and Garrett Professor of Public Policy and Business Responsibility at Columbia Business School. His most recent book, Video 2040: The New Mediatech, AI, and the Next Generation of Media, was published in 2026.
