Professor Richard Gershon is a leading scholar in media, telecommunications, and business strategy, with an academic career spanning more than three decades. Since 1990, he has served as Professor and Co-Director of the Telecommunications & Information Management program at Western Michigan University, nurturing generations of media management professionals and researchers. Now retired from Western Michigan University, Prof Emeritus Gershon remains active in the field—publishing new work, attending conferences, and contributing to academic debate.
Cultivating Creative Strategies in Media Management
Prof Gershon holds a Ph.D. from Ohio University (1986) and a Master’s degree from the University of Vermont (1978). His influential contributions include multiple editions of “Media, Telecommunications and Business Strategy” (Routledge, 2020), “Digital Media and Innovation: The Creative Next Step” (2nd ed., Routledge, 2023/2024), and foundational chapters on transnational media corporations and global business strategy in volumes such as “Global Communication” (Rowman & Littlefield, 2019) and “The Handbook of Media Management and Business” (Rowman & Littlefield, 2020). His recent editorial achievement, the “De Gruyter Handbook of Media Technology and Innovation,” brings together twenty international experts on emerging technology trends, including smart cities, AI, Web3, metaverse, and the social impacts of digital media.
Innovative Business Models in the Digital Economy
In 2024, Prof Gershon published the second edition of “Digital Media and Innovation: Management and Design Strategies in Communication,” offering advanced material on business model innovation, smart cities, product design, and the evolution of artificial intelligence, among other important topics. He is currently developing a new website—The Digital NavigatorEG—which explores media business strategy and technology innovation in depth. The site provides resources and suggested readings for scholars and practitioners and, while still in its early stages, is planned to offer increasingly rich content in the future.
