Ilhem Allagui

Dr. Allagui is Associate Professor at Northwestern University in Qatar, in the Journalism and Strategic Communication Program. Before joining NU-Q, she was an Associate Professor at the American University of Sharjah (UAE) and a Lecturer at the  University of Montreal (Canada). Dr. Allagui received her Ph.D. in communication science at the University of Montreal (2006).

Dr. Allagui’s most recent publication is Advertising in MENA Goes Digital (Routledge, 2019) is one of the few book-length projects dedicated entirely to the advertising industry in the Middle East and North Africa, and tells the inside story of local, regional and global advertising in the region. She has also served as guest editor for the International Journal of Communication (published by the Annenberg School of Communication) three times, for special topics “The Tunisian and Egyptian Revolutions and the Role of ICTs” (2011), “Waiting for Spring: Arab Revolutions and Change” (2014), and most recently “The Gulf Information War and the Role of Information and Communication Technologies” (2019).

Dr. Allagui is interested in the digital and online media in the Middle East, with recent publications covering such topics as the changing nature of socialization among Arab youth, nationalism in the Arab Gulf, big data in the MENA regions, digital media and socio-political change in the Arab region, and the collective construction of knowledge on Arabic Wikipedia. Additionally, between 2009 and 2013, she was the lead  Principal Investigator (PI) on the Emirates Internet Project, member of the World Internet Project, and for which she received funding from the National Research Foundation (UAE). Currently, she is co-PI in the Media Use in the Middle East project, funded by Qatar Foundation (mideastmedia.org).

Her refereed publications include articles in International Journal of Communication, CyberOrient, Public Relations Review, Journal of Business and Policy Research, Middle East Journal of Culture and Communication, Journal of Integrated Marketing Communications, Global Media Journal, andThe International Journal of Technology, Knowledge, and Society. Additionally, she serves on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Communication and Internet Histories (Taylor & Francis).
